Life After
Sports

Connecting The Dots (CTD) is an initiative dedicated to helping student-athletes discover purpose beyond the game. We partner with schools, colleges, and athletic organizations to deliver programming that supports identity development, mental and emotional wellness, and exploration of life pathways beyond sports.

Our approach includes Athlete Summits, workshops, and Growth Circles that connect student-athletes to careers, mentors, and meaningful opportunities for transformation.

Born From
Experience

CTD was founded by former NFL player Mathu Gibson, whose transition out of sports exposed the identity challenges many athletes face. Mentors guided him, connected him to opportunities, and helped him rediscover who he was beyond the game — a journey that became the spark for CTD.

Mathu has spent years mentoring students and supporting athlete development across schools and community organizations, and that experience continues to shape CTD's approach.

Since launching the first Athlete Summit in 2023 at Harding University High School in Charlotte, CTD has continued creating spaces where student-athletes build clarity, confidence, and purpose beyond the sport.

Three Connection Points

We believe thriving athletes are deeply connected to who they are, to the support around them, and to where they're going next.

01
Connection to Self

Identity, values, and inner voice. Discover who you are beyond your jersey — and build a foundation that holds when the game ends.

02
Connection to Support

Mental health awareness, emotional balance, and safe spaces to feel seen and heard. You don't have to carry the transition alone.

03
Connection to Purpose

Exposure to college and career pathways, goal-setting, and direction for life after sports. Your next chapter is worth preparing for.

Why This Work Matters

CTD surveyed 125 former student-athletes across every level of competition. What they told us reveals a systemic failure — and a clear mandate for the work we do.

89%
of student-athletes said they received no formal transition support
Universities do incredible work preparing athletes to compete. But the data shows a consistent gap — when the final whistle blows, most athletes are navigating the next chapter without a formal roadmap.
64%
lost their sense of purpose after sports ended
70%
rated mental wellness as fair, poor, or very poor in year one
48%
felt unprepared or not at all prepared for life after sports
86%
would mentor current student-athletes about life after sports

"The game is temporary. Your mental health you have forever. Make sure you take care of your mental as much — if not more — than your physical."
